Serious Cross Country buffs have at least heard about the legend of the Birkie in Northwest Wisconsin. This great, rolling trail, which travels the woods between Cable and Hayward, Wisconsin is known throughout the world. Home to the famous "Birkie Challenge" each year, the trail is public and has 52k of professionally groomed track like nothing you've seen before. Experts will love the challenge! There are beginner runs here, too.
VEIKKO SKI TRAIL
This is one of the most remote, natural trails you'll find in all the state. Located in Northern Wisconsin, where the area is commonly buried in snow, this trail is worth the trip for the view alone. This ungroomed trail parallels Morgan Creek, runs through a valley, over old logging roads, and travels the edge of hardwood forests. You won't make good time here, but its skill appropriate for almost any level skier.
ASHLAND SKI TRAIL
Ashland Ski Trail is an easy, well groomed course that runs right through the city of Ashland. The entire 6.5k is packed and offers some nice classic style skiing for any skill level, though it mostly serves beginner to intermediate skiers.
BLUE HILLS TRAILS
One of the best kept secrets in Northwest Wisconsin is an area called The Blue Hills. With more than 30k of secluded, wooded trails, this is a great spot to commune with nature and test your skill level. Old logging roads, hills and lots trees make this one of the most challenging, ungroomed areas anywhere. Don't miss this natural wonder!
AFTERGLOW LAKE RESORT
Professionally groomed to perfection by former mogul skier Pete Moline, these runs travel through a thick hardwood forest, keeping you out of Wisconsin's nasty winter wind. 17.6k of of the Nicolet National Forest is what you'll find here. Well worth the trip!! Best for intermediate to experts.
Willow River State Park
With trails ranging from easy to exhilarating, this spot offers more than just a challenge for any type of skier. All runs are groomed for both classical and skate skiing and a Nature Center provides a warming shelter for all on weekends. You'll find 13k of fun in this city!
This is another great hideaway, tucked in the outskirts of Menomonie. Hilly climbs and descends, wooded areas and 10k of ground to cover make this a diehard skiers dream come true. Beginner's can do it, but they should be in good shape.
NINE MILE FOREST
These 30k of open terrain have been voted some of the best runs in all the state. Treks for beginners to experts are professionally groomed and in perfect condition. A heated chalet is also open from 9am-6pm daily.
BLACK RIVER STATE FOREST
Black River Falls, WI
The Black River State Forest caters to all skill levels. 29k of professionally groomed trails are challenging enough for experts, yet not too difficult for the young at heart. Set in the beautiful Black River Falls Forest, this is a scenic day trip perfect for families.
BROWN COUNTY REFORESTATION CAMP
GREEN BAY, WI
The best skiing in the Green Bay area is at the Brown County Reforestation Camp. With 30k of groomed trails, you can't go wrong with this family friendly site. There are a few large hills, but the trails are not rugged. This area is perfect for experts and beginners alike, and even offers a completely flat beginners trail for the weary.
Situated in a peaceful valley surrounded by forested hills, Justin Trails has 12k of groomed cross country ski runs. Special narrow tracks for beginners and small children are a definite plus here. A wide variety of trails rated by difficulty level, make this a nice spot for all skill levels.
Monroe, WI is known around the world as "the cheese capitol of the world." This sleepy little town is also home to some great rugged territory and trails that will have you ripping corners and spilling down hills. There are 10.5k of non-groomed trails for the taking here. Experts, gear up for a great run. Beginners may want to sit this one out.
