Carter Caves State Resort Park is located 30 miles west of Ashland, Kentucky and consists of about 1,800 acres. There are twenty or so caverns that wind beneath the wooded hills. Some have been explores while others have not yet been charted. The Welcome Center provides information on cave tours and orientation, rest rooms, and an array of Kentucky handcrafts in the gift shop.
Overnight guests may stay at the 28-room Caveland Lodge or one of the park's 10 cottages. The beautiful fieldstone lodge rooms offer many amenities. Nine of the cottages have four queen size beds while the tenth cottage has two queen size beds and one king size bed. All cottages are furnished with cooking utensils, tableware, and have fresh linens available daily. The 115- seat lodge dining room serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The pool near the lodge is for the exclusive use of the park's overnight guests.
Carter Caves Lodge underwent a $1.75 million renovation that was completed in May 1999. Meeting and banquet facilities are available and can accommodate up to 350 guests. The William Jason Fields Meeting Facility can accommodate between 200 and 350 guest depending on the seating style.
An 89-site campground with utility hookups is available as well. It has two central service buildings that provide showers and rest rooms. A garbage dumping area is nearby too.
Various cave tours are available for beginning to advanced spelunkers. Cascade Cave features a 30-foot tall underground waterfall that is breathtaking. The X Cave is named after the shape of its passages and known for its many formations. Bat Cave is the largest cave in the park and is the winter home of thousands of rare bats. It is only seen in the summer months. Saltpetre Cave has links with Kentucky's early history. Fees are charged for tours.
Non-motorized boating is allowed on the 40-acre lake, as is fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish, and crappie. A boat dock is open from Memorial Day until Labor Day. Rentals are available for fishing and pedal boats and guided canoe trips on Tygart's Creek are available as well.
There are 20 miles of wooded nature trails that range for easy to difficult to accommodate the various hiking ability levels of park visitors. A 9-hole regulation golf course is located at the park and includes a fully equipped pro shop that offers rentals of clubs and carts. Miniature golf is available on a seasonal basis as well. A community pool is open to all park visitors. Horse stables and guided trail rides are available to equestrian enthusiasts. Other activities include tennis and picnicking. Tennis courts are available near the lodge. Picnic areas and playgrounds are located throughout the park and two shelters are available for rentals.
