Most people think of insomnia as the inability to fall asleep, however there are different types of insomnia. Waking up several time during the night, waking up early in the morning, and just plain feeling tired and unrefreshed in the morning, are all considered forms of insomnia. There are a variety of causes including stress, arthritis, and depression. Those suffering from chronic insomnia should always consult a doctor to rule out serious illness.
What do you do when your doctor tells you there is no medical cause for your sleeplessness? You could reach for any of the number of sleep medications available without a prescription. However, for many people the over
the counter preparations are not the answer. They can leave you feeling drugged the next morning. Many of them are addictive.
There are many natural, gentle, and safe ways to knockout insomnia. The very first thing you should do is pay attention to your sleep surroundings. Is it too hot or too cold for comfortable slumber? How about background noise? Make sure your sleep clothes are made from a soft, breathable material and are not restricting in any way. Better yet, wear nothing. Drink nothing containing caffeine after lunch time and if you smoke, try not to smoke for at least one hour before bed. You should get your body used to a sleep routine and stick to it. That means going to bed and getting up at about the same time
every day, weekends included.
Many times sleeplessness is caused by stress. Try listening to soothing music for an hour before bed. Meditation is a wonderful way to melt stress and relax the body. There are several wonderful books and many good tapes that can teach you to meditate effectively. Using a technique known as creative visualization can also be helpful. See yourself in relaxing surroundings. Lounging by a stream, walking in the woods. Whatever activity that puts you most at ease, when imagined, can help relax the body so you can sleep. Try burning soothing incense while you practice your meditation. Rose is very soothing.
Another effective treatment is the use of herbal teas. Chamomile tea is very effective. Valerian helps calm you down and relieve muscle tension. Kava Kava can help induce sleep, take it 4 hours before you want to sleep. Lemon Balm tea shortly before bedtime relieves nervous tension, and helps you sleep. Peppermint is great for many things. If you’re unable to sleep due to a headache, then peppermint is your best bet. Drink one cup of strong tea and lay down. Not only will your headache disappear, but you’ll sleep wonderfully.
