Cancer is one of the most devastating diseases known to man, and there are few things scarier than being diagnosed with the affliction. There are many different types of cancer, but almost all can be treated when they are diagnosed early enough. Because of this fact, it is extremely important for people to be able to recognize some general symptoms of the disease. It is important to remember that the best way to catch the disease early enough to allow a favorable prognosis is to go to your physician and get the necessary tests, especially if you are over 40. One of the most common symptoms of many types of cancer is any unusual bleeding or discharges. For example, an unusual discharge from the nipple can be a sign of breast cancer and bleeding from the anus or blood in the stool can be a symptom of colorectal cancer. One of the better known symptoms that is visible only in a small number of cancers is a lump. A lump in the breast is a strong indication of breast cancer, and a lump in the testicle is a symptom of testicular cancer. It is recommended that women do monthly breast self-exams and men do monthly testicular self-exams to check for the presence of anomalies in these areas. Other symptoms that are not specific to cancer but that are seen in many cases include unexplained weight loss and unexplained fatigue.
