Berries are good for you so you can eat as many as you like without feeling guilty. You can also freeze them and enjoy them all year round. They are low in calories but naturally sweet and rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals. They contain hardly any protein and even less fat. Below we will take a look at some of the different berries you can eat.


Strawberries
These are a summer fruit and there are different varieties. You can eat them with cream or yoghurt or include them in pies and desserts. But they are also good on their own without any added ingredients.

Raspberries
These are a very delicate fruit. The best berrries should be of a good color and firm with a delicious scent. They only last for about three days even when refrigerated. They are best eaten fresh or with cream.

Blueberries
These were originally a wild fruit but now it is grown commercially. They are delicious eaten raw or cooked in a variety of recipes.

Gooseberries
These come in white, red and yellow varieties as well as the more usual green. They have quite a tart taste so they are usually stewed with sugar or made into a preserve.

Blackcurrants
These are almost always served cooked as a filling for pies and puddings. They are rick in vitamin C and pectin which makes them the ideal fruit for jams and jellies.

Redcurrants
These make a lovely jelly and are also good tossed into fruit salads.

Never eat wild berries unless you are a 100% sure of what they are. Some wild berries are poisonous and could be fatal.
