Ingredients:

1 1/2 c sugar
1 1/2 c water
1/8 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp nutmeg
2 drops red food coloring
2 tbsp butter or margarine
2 c flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
2/3 c shortening
1/2 c milk
6 whole apples, pared and cored

Preparation:

Combine sugar, water, cinnamon, nutmeg, and food coloring; bring to a boil. Add butter and remove from heat. Sift together flour, bakin powder, and salt; cut in shortening. Add milk all at once and stir until moistened. Roll on a lightly floured surface into a 12x18 inch rectangle. Cut with pastry wheel or knife into 6 inch squares. Place 1 apple in center of each aquare. Sprinkle each apple with additional cinnamon, suage and a dot of butter. Fold corners of pastry over apple to center and pinch together. Place 1 inch apart in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Spoon the warm syrup over the dumplings; sprinkle with more sugar. Bake at 375 degrees for 35 minutes. Serve warm or cold with milk or cream, if desired.
