John Travolta Biography
John Travolta has had his share of flops and success in his acting career. He is back on top and going strong.
John Travolta was born on February 18, 1954, in Englewood, New Jersey. He is the youngest of six children. His parents encouraged creative expression, which led to his decision to go into acting. After he turned sixteen years of age, with his parents’ permission, Travolta dropped out of Dwight Morrow high school to pursue an acting career full time. He appeared in over forty commercials and numerous plays.
In 1975, he got his career break in the television sitcom "Welcome Back Cotter" which starred Gabriel Kaplan. The sitcom lasted until 1979. While on hiatus from the sitcom, Travolta also starred in his first made for television movie "The Boy in the Plastic Bubble." Then, in 1977, John Travolta made the movie "Saturday Night Fever" with the following year bringing the movie "Grease" where he starred opposite Olivia Newton-John. While Travolta and his co-star shared some chemistry between them, nothing happened in the way of a relationship off screen. After being a hit in "Grease," Travolta became a teen idol but it was too much for him, as he became a star overnight. He finally made his transition from teenage to adult actor.
Unfortunately from 1983 to 1989, he was in a series of movie flops. He has made over forty films for the big screen and television, with his most memorable roles being in the movies "Grease" and "Saturday Night Fever." His siblings tried making their mark in the acting world with only one of his brothers and sister succeeding for a short period of time.
He went into seclusion for approximately three years so he could get a handle on his life and enjoy his son and wife (actress Kelly Preston) whom he wed on September 5,1991 after knowing each other for two years. Because of his first marriage not being legal, because a Scientologist minister wed them Travolta and his bride had a civil ceremony on September 12, 1991.
Travolta came back into films in 1994 in the movie "Pulp Fiction." His comeback was a huge success and he has been actively working on films ever since.
During the spring of the year 2000, Travolta produced his first movie, "Battlefield Earth", which he also starred in.
He is in charge and complete control of his acting career and is as popular as ever. He has more mature acting rolls and has not been stereotyped into any one role. He plays good and bad guys and has played in both dramatic and comedic roles.
