Gretchen Michaela Young was born on January 6, 1913 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She had two older sisters and one younger brother. After her family moved to California, her mother ran a boarding house in Hollywood and Miss Young and her sisters were child extras in silent movies. She appeared in films until she was four years of age. Her mother sent her away to attend a school run by a convent. Miss Young returned home at fourteen years of age and started began her transition to adult roles. She tried for a role in the movie "Naughty But Nice" which she won. The movie made it to the box offices in 1927. After the film, Miss Young signed a contract with Warner Brothers until 1934. After her contract expired with Warner Brothers, she signed on with 20th Century Fox until 1940. After 1940, Loretta Young went on her own to get her own movies. She wasn’t going to sign another studio contract.

In 1940, Loretta Young wed Tom Lewis and they were married until his death in 1988. It was after Lewis’s death that Miss Young went public and said that her daughter was actually Clark Gable’s. She starred opposite Clark Gable in five films so there was opportunity, if what Miss Young says is true.

This was the beginning of a long acting career, which included one hundred films being the leading lady in the majority of them. She also had her own television show "The Loretta Young Show," which ran from 1953 to 1961 after she retired from acting in films. Miss Young filmed thirty-nine television episodes each year, in which she starred in approximately nineteen.

In 1962, Miss Young started a new family comedy – "The New Loretta Young Show." When the show went off of the air in its final season, Miss Young retired from acting until the late 1980s.

In 1993, she married Jean Louis and currently raises funds for her favorite charity, The Damian Food Fund for the Poor, which is located in Cathedral City, California.
